NEWoMan is the latest shopping mall at Shinjuku Station. It’s a mix of fashion boutiques, food shops, cafes, bakeries and restaurants, but it also has some fine views of the south side of Shinjuku as well as trains coming into the station. Shops at NEWoMan are aimed at “mature women who are looking for truly fine items.”
The mall is located on the south side of Koshu-Kaido Street, across from the main Shinjuku Station complex and adjacent to the new South Exit arm, as well as the new Basuta Shinjuku bus terminal. The southern side of the mall is next to the Shinjuku Southern Terrace shopping district, which is dominated by the Takashimaya Times Square mall.
NEWoMan itself takes up eight floors in the JR Shinjuku Miraina Tower and can be easily accessed by all JR train lines as well as the nearby Fukutoshin, Oedo and Shinjuku subway lines.
Made up of dozens of shops and food outlets, NEWoMan is divided into the Ekinaka (or inside the station) section, the Ekisoto (outside the station) section, a food hall, and a fashion zone. They begin on the first floor, which is on the level of the streets running beneath Koshu-Kaido Street, and continue on a mezzanine floor, and then the second floor, which has access to Shinjuku Station.
On the first floor, you’ll find Akomeya Tokyo, a rice specialty shop. While consumption of rice has been declining over the past few decades in Japan, a recent push to market high-quality brands has revived interest. Akomeya has rice from farms all over the country as well as related items such as cookware, utensils and cypress sake cups.
On the second floor is Astraet, a brand launched in 2014 by major Japanese clothing retailer United Arrows. Director Futoshi Toya has aimed to modernize and revitalize classic looks for women who want to make a bold statement.
Also on the second floor is La Maison du Chocolat, a French artisanal chocolate maker offering colorful macarons, a favorite in recent years among Tokyoites who have a sweet tooth.
‘Eir on the second floor is a footwear and accessories boutique specializing in imported brands.
On the third floor of NEWoMan is the latest outlet by Estnation, which is known for its selection of internationally renowned designers for both men and women. It carries casual and business attire as well as jewelry and other accessories.
NEWoMan has a unique series of outdoor spaces overlooking Shinjuku Station to the north and Shinjuku Southern Terrace to the south. Railway enthusiasts can view trains coming into Shinjuku Station along the Yamanote Line and other railways; there are also several outdoor tables for drinks and dining.
